I've been collecting the parts for an amd64 for a few days now; it was almost
completed today by a 20-pin ATX -> 24-pin EPS/EATX connector (I have a very,
very purty video card on order -- PCIE, yo). But, being PCIE, until the X850
XT PE arrives, I have no video cards other than the PCI ones, owing to a lack
of AGP support. I thought this would be OK, except they were all 4MB (i.e. no
1600x1200x24), and the S3 didn't support DDC, so I went out and bought a cheap
PCIE card (X300 SE) to tide me over.
When I came back from getting the new video card, my i386 was totally hung. Alt-SysRq-S-U-B seemed to blank the screen, but nothing else. A thorough investigation revealed that it was totally stuffed. Would not boot. Possibly the northbridge fan's refusal to spin could have something to do with this. So, as soon as I come home with the last bit to make the amd64 usable, the i386, which has served me faithfully for 37 months, dies.
Jealousy?
